To mark my valiant return to the blog, I thought I’d grace you folks with this video about how the artist, Girl Talk has utilized over 300+ samples in  his records and has managed to avoid being sued. I’m assuming that the majority of our viewers are sample based producers, so this should be some good information to know. Enjoy!

Even though the title of this video is “9th Wonder Says Wonder Years May Never Come Out”, the subject of “The Wonder Years” is not the focal point of this video. 9th Wonder, who introduces himself as “Grammy-award winning producer, DJ, and intellectual” in the beginning of the vid, discusses where he wants to be in the future, and his thoughts on his position within the world of hip hop.

It used to be when there was a remix there was a new beat, new producer, maybe some new rhymes.

Have you ever noticed now with a remix theres new rhymes, maybe a new artist but the beat always stays the same?

Many of us miss the remix; weve all had conversations about it. Whatever happened to that creative second burst that was more than merely an additional guest feature, but a complete flip on the way you experience a song?

Lazy lack of vision and targeting the mindless ringtone markets are often assumed to be key reasons for the plethora of barely altered edits presented to us as remixes today. It turns out, for those of us who knew no better, that there is actually some business logic behind the shift.

In conversation with SoulCulture TV in London, prolific Hip Hop producer Just Blaze explains: The remix became a marketing tool and a BDS [Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems] spin generator, [which calculates multi-platform airplay figures] so the artform got taken out of it and the dollars got put into it If you change the beat, the computers that run BDS dont pick it up as the same song. So the whole point is to get more spins

DJ Premier Speaks on Kanye West’s New Album

1. So tell us a little bit about yourself, who are you and what music do you make?

“I’m a 25 year old beat maker known as “G” a.k.a “AnalPhatBeat”. I’m from a city called Reims (France.)  I don’t make a living off making beats.  I do Graphic Design which is kind of  complimentary to my music. I started out producing tracks for emcees and I’ve also deejayed for some groups but now I’m just focusing on my own instrumental stuff.

I find it’s difficult to define my music with a particular word or phrase as it’s in constant evolution. I have produced a mixture of  Electronic music, Drum & Bass, Grime, Chiptune etc. I try to make music that I would love to hear,  groovy, dark, compressed, deep & bassfull music.”

2. Anal Phat Beat! That’s an interesting name, would you like to tell us how you came up with it?

“This name came from a word pun but I think it’s also relevant to my music. I think I’m “AnalPhatBeat” because I don’t know a fucking thing about musical notation, solfege, harmonics etc and the anal is also short for analog.”

3. How long have you been making beats and what would you say influenced you to first get into music?

“I’ve had a passion for music since childhood and I think that I made some of my first beats sometime around 1999, changing sample rates of my samples in order to make them compatible with H.H Ejay,aha. Things started to change when I got  my first MPC. It was a revolution for my beats, sample slicing & rythm programming have definately changed my beat making process.”

4. I notice there are a lot of jazzy/soulful Hip Hop vibes coming out of France at the moment from people like Dela and Hocus Pocus, how do you feel about the movement over there? Are there any hidden gems that we are missing out on?

“Those people make great tracks. I love the work of Pfel and 20syl. For me these guys are real musicians, more than just the average DJ or beat maker.  I’ve also got to mention a French MC/Producer, “Khondo”. This guy is such an underated artist in my opinion. These people keep in mind this Hip Hop culture and where it all came from, I think it’s good to go back to the roots sometimes. There are so many unknown people out there who are making great music.”

5. Do you have any particular tools in your Arsenal you would like to big up?

“Yes, I would like to big up the Ableton Developement team for making the Ableton Live software! I think their partnerships with Akai, Serato  and Novation have enabled such great possibilities! After the Akai MPC, it has been a second revolution for me. I also love my Korg synths, the MS20, Microkorg, Ea1 and The Spectrasonics & Arturia plug-ins etc.”

6. You recently put out a new instrumental project “Calques”, can you tell us a little bit about that?

“Since the beginning of the year I’ve put my Calques Beat Tape up for sale on Bandcamp. I actually finished this project back in 2008. The tracks have been composed in a lot of different places and in a very spontaneous way. Some of the tracks were recorded live, without sequencing”

7. What inspires you to make beats?

“I guess I try to capture through my beats moments in my life, a mood, or strange feelings that you can’t always explain with words. When I make music, I’ve got images in my head. I want to do visual, graphic, colorful audio and share that with the listener. My aim is to bring people into my universe like in a movie. I want to tell a story with a beggining and an ending. I love Sci-Fi, analog type of sounds, heavy basslines, melancholic, dark stuff.

8. It seems that you like to keep pretty busy. Is there any of your older stuff you feel we should know about, any free downloads?

“I often upload “oldies” and work in progress on Soundcloud. There’s also some promo stuff across the web on beat related blogs etc.” (See links below interview.)

9. What can we expect to be hearing from you next?

“My EP, Herb Expert’s Marijuana Beats will soon be available on Bandcamp. I also collab with a lot of foreign artists I’ve met on the web. Latest was a remix project with UXO, an Italian beatmaker. If everything goes to plan we will be putting this out later this month. Apart from that I’m producing & gathering tracks for a future beat project. I’m also looking for a label to release it.”
