The Dojo’s Picks: Best Sample Resource Websites

The only question I get more than “Where do you get your drums?” is “Where do you get your samples?”. I would be lying if I said I ONLY sample from records, though I do prefer them over MP3′s. I realized it’s the same shit whether I rip the vinyl myself or download it from a site where someone else ripped the vinyl and uploaded it. Well, it’s the same beat wise. I still do prefer to own the actual record though…

Anyways, I put together a list of some of my favorite online sites to download records. The Soul Dojo being a website dedicated to producers, I felt like I haven’t been playing my part in giving back and supporting you guys. I really haven’t made any detailed posts, everything here has been music and some stuff you can find on any other blog. But, I’m looking to change that. Pal brought to my attention that we need more original content so this is a good start.

Here are some of my favorite online blogs to download records for sampling:

Raggedy Soul

  • This is a dope site where (mostly 70′s soul) songs are posted on divShare players. You can stream it and click the player to download it if you like it. I also like that they use the LinkWithin plugin that will display similar posts, so if you like the sound of that song you can look around for more.

Milk Crate Breaks

  • Milk Crate Breaks was probably the first e-diggin’ spot I ever used. If you dig back far enough you might find the sample to a lot of joints I produced haha. They post a variety of full albums and give information on it and who sampled it if applicable.

Blog Sport Soul & Soul Deep Music

  • These blogs were by the same people, they post dope stuff but don’t really update the site frequently. Be sure to take note of the file passwords before downloading so you don’t download it then not be able to extract it.

My Quietstorm

  • This one is probably my all time favorite. The writer puts together compilations of 70′s artists best work. UNFORTUNATELY, QS_Bird felt that no one was appreciating what she was doing, so she made the blog private. I still have access though :D nananananana.

Honorable Mentions:

The Daily Jazz

Joe Blow The Sample King

Soul Sides

Be sure to leave a comment with your favorite sample blogs or if you would like me to do another list.

Thank you so much for the nice comments on my blog. I really appreciate it very much. Young Dub is right, music blogs are getting deleted by the dozen, which is actually sad because most of us only try to keep the music playing, so to speak. Once people don’t hear them any longer, these songs will disappear. And together with the songs, the artists and a piece of history will be forgotten.
    Thanks again!
I would like to recommend gildog’s “All Soul And Funk” blog http://allsoulandfunk.blogspot.com/ (albums and album collections) and
“Feel It,” Darcy’s blog: http://darcysfeelit.blogspot.com/ (he shares his wonderful vinyl/single collection.)

Wishing everyone lots of love and happiness

Ah great article, and your right about downloading samples, compared to actually getting them from vinyl, because I would love to just use vinyl to make beats, but the truth is I just can’t afford it! So these sites helped me out a lot, Thanks man.
